Limited Benefit Plans
Limited Medical Benefit Plans provide affordable benefit alternatives for those employees who do not qualify for Major Medical Plans, those who cannot afford the group health insurance plan, and family members who may not be offered coverage at an affordable rate. These plans can cost far less than traditional major medical insurance but they "cap" what the insurer will pay toward medical care. Generally they have a maximum amount the insurer will pay in a given year as well as a scheduled amount per occurrence. Many of the plans provide for "1st Dollar" payments with no deductibles or co-payments. These are not major medical plans and should not be selected by Employers or Employees who can afford the traditional plans. However, it should be noted that a study by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Ohio showed on average 92% of their insureds use less than $1,000 of benefits per year.
